Ike K. Ahmed, MD, FRCSC is Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto, where he directs research at the Kensington Eye Institute and the Glaucoma and Advanced Anterior Surgical Fellowship program. He has authored a myriad of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and serves on the editorial boards of publications, such as Ophthalmology, Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and formerly the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Ahmed is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the 2014 Binkhorst Medal from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. In 2010, Dr. Ahmed was selected as one of Canada’s “Top 40 Under 40”. Dr. Ahmed received his doctorate of medicine from the University of Toronto, where he did his medical and surgical internship and ophthalmology residency. He completed a fellowship in glaucoma and anterior segment at the Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, and was later appointed Clinical Assistant Professor.

Lisa C. Olmos de Koo, MD, MBA is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in the division of vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, where she is the director of the surgical retina fellowship program at the USC Eye Institute. Dr. Olmos is the Primary Investigator of the Argus trial at USC and is currently leading USC in the commercial launch of the Argus II Retinal Implant for patients with retinitis pigmentosa and related retinal degenerations. She also has research experience in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Olmos received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Harvard University, an MBA from Rice University, and a medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where she was the recipient of the American Medical Women’s Association scholastic achievement award. Dr. Olmos completed a medical internship at Georgetown University/Inova Fairfax Hospital, and completed her residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. In her final year in Miami, she served as Chief Resident, Clinical Instructor, and Co-Director of Ocular Trauma. Dr. Olmos has been voted one of Pasadena’s “Top Doctors” for 3 consecutive years from 2012-2014, and she was the recipient of a “Rising Star” award from Los Angeles Magazine in 2013.

The new services satisfy various regulatory standards including US Pharmacopoeia (USP), European Pharmacopeia (EP), and 1993 FDA Points to Consider.

“This is a very exciting development and represents a major milestone towards our goal of being a one-stop-shop for the adventitious agent testing needs of our customers”, said Dr. Richard Jones, Vice President of ABR.

Mycoplasmas and the related acholeplasmas are one of the smallest (0.15 to 0.3 µM) and self-replicating bacteria and are frequent contaminants of animal origin products. Mycoplasma contamination may be introduced into cell cultures or biological products through master virus seeds, master cell stocks, starting material of animal origin such as serum and trypsin, during passage of cells and virus, and in product assembly.

“Mycoplasma contamination can change the metabolism of cells, resulting in physical and chemical changes in the cell and potential production of unreliable and unsafe biologicals,” said Jose Alcocer, Sr. Microbiologist. “It is essential that biological products be tested for mycoplasma contamination to assure consistency of production and final product safety.”

The potential to test raw materials and other sample types by multiple standards gives ABR the ability to satisfy the needed requirements that vary based on specific customer and product types as well as planned usage of the material they are providing. Lymphoma Research Foundation Raises More than $140,000 at Annual Fashion Luncheon for Blood Cancer Research and Education

The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) – the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted exclusively to funding innovative lymphoma research and serving the lymphoma community through a comprehensive series of education programs, outreach initiatives and patient services – hosted its Ninth Annual Luncheon in Boca Raton on Monday, February 2, 2015, raising over $ 140,000 for critical research programs and patient services. The event, which packed St. Andrews Country Club to capacity once again, treated attendees to an exclusive fashion show by Neiman Marcus Boca Raton, a pop up boutique and makeovers courtesy of Dior Beauty, and presentations from leading lymphoma expert Dr. Stephen D. Nimer, Director, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In addition to their rebranded image, DebtWave has begun work on developing an online portal called Payoff Pilot. Set to launch later on this year, Payoff Pilot will allow future clients to perform their own online credit counseling session and sign up for a Debt Management Program without having to speak with a credit counselor. This software will enable individuals to view their credit report and credit score, create a budget and view their potential savings, and choose from one of the various payment plans to pay off their credit card debt.

“We’re excited to provide future clients the ability to do everything online at their own leisure,” says Director of Counseling Services, Carlos Perez. “We all have such busy lives nowadays where spending 30-45 minutes on the phone with a counselor can be challenging for some people. Plus, some people are embarrassed to talk to a stranger about their credit card debt. Payoff Pilot will offer both privacy and convenience.”

Despite the cosmetic changes, DebtWave is still committed to providing credit counseling and debt management services nationwide. They remain a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers free credit counseling sessions, a Debt Management Program, student loan consolidation, and a financial education program. The first phase in implementation of Simplified Acquisition Program is the creation of a federally formatted website viewable at http://www.fabricare1gov.com/. This site services as the central HUB for all purchasing officers to view for key criteria needed to award federal contracts such as: Past Performance, Capabilities Statement, Federal Registration Information (CAGE Code, D&B, GSA Schedule, SDVOSB, WOSB..etc), and the businesses contact information. The website also displays the Verified Vendor Seal which is only allowed to be administered by US Federal Contractor Registration. The Simplified Acquisition Program then provided Fabricare Draperies with monthly email bid notifications; these bid notifications were sent directly to the contact email on Fabricare Draperies Inc’s account with US Federal Contractor Registration. Each of the emails provided new solicitations that were available for bidding that matched their North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes and were relevant to the business goals of Fabricare Draperies Inc.
